The so hum mantra

Honolulu Myohoji has been offering meditation classes before pandemic, and we think meditation is the way to connect with your true self.

The other way to connect with your true self is chanting mantra.

Since Honolulu Myohoji belongs to Nichiren-shu, we chant Nam Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo. However, there are other ways to chant, so we would like to introduce one today.

Today, we experience so hum mantra.

The so hum mantra is simple but powerful. It can be chanted internally or externally for 5-20 minutes or with a mala 108 times or as much as you want to.

How to: Sit comfortably (upright is ideal), chant “so” slowly with your inhale, and “hum” with the exhale. When the mind wanders, gently bring it back to focusing on the sound and feeling of the mantra.  When you finish, open your eyes gently.

The so hum mantra is an easy way to start a meditation practice.
