After the defeated duo returned home to Maryland, the junk yard owner hired a professional to investigate what went wrong during Darby’s hunt for gold. The mine engineer was an expert of the goldmine fault line and calculated precise locations of where the real mine could be. This helped the junk yard owner quickly find the gold. It was roughly three feet away from where the Darby’s had quit. Sure enough, the junk yard owner became wealthy very quickly.

Napoleon Hill became famous after interviewing many successful people over the span of 20 years. This was a long-term project commissioned by the steel lord, Andrew Carnegie, in order to find the ultimate secret to success. After meeting close to 500 successful business people, Napoleon Hill concluded that the real secret to success is neither talent, education, or family background. In fact, the secret is having an unwavering attitude to “never give up”.

The success story of the junk yard owner and his newly acquired wealth travelled all the way to Maryland. Only three feet away?! The extremely disappointing story crushed the pair. R. U. Darby and his uncle spent several years working to pay back their debt. In fact, R. U. Darby was later interviewed by Napoleon Hill due to his success later on in life. While he was not as rich as he could have been with gold, he later became a successful owner of the top insurance company in Maryland.

U. Darby shared with Napoleon Hill that he learned to stick to his goals due to the great deal of disappointment he experienced in his life early on. As a young insurance agent, many people turned him down. Despite these rejections he encountered, he continued to spend time and effort to convince potential clients to work with him. He took the time to understand their needs and goals. His persistence and patience eventually paid off, making him one of the most successful agents in Maryland.

I reflected back on what would have happened if the Darby’s did hit the goldmine. If luck were on their side by hitting the goldmine, would they have become a successful person later on, similar to those who are interviewed by Napoleon Hill?  Were they able to learn a valuable lesson from this misfortune? Life is never without disappointments or failures and it is up to us to decide what to do with it. After all, mistakes and failures may be disguised as the beginning of another success story.

Napoleon Hill previously said, “If you give up before your goal has been reached, you are a ‘quitter’. A QUITTER NEVER WINS AND A WINNER NEVER QUITS.”
